I was on a campus tour of my own – at the University of Montana – this afternoon when I heard the news that my friend Charlie Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University.
I apologize if this email is jumbled or disjointed. My emotions are really raw, and I’ll admit that I’m having a hard time right now.
Charlie was a fighter for Life.
He was a good friend and someone I talked to regularly – and was always willing to help, even cutting a DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD TV ad with me earlier this year.
Now, Charlie is gone . . . assassinated at age 31.
As much as that hurts me (and the country because Charlie was a patriot), I can’t imagine the pain Charlie’s wife, Erika, and his two children must be in. And I’m angry – for them, for me, and for this nation.
While I don’t yet know anything about the killer, I have to guess that Charlie was killed because he committed the supposed “crime” of showing up on a college campus – paid for at least in part with our tax dollars – and speaking the truth.

Just consider the polling data that was released by the Foundation for Individual Rights just yesterday, which showed: 1 in 3 students at elite campuses say violence is acceptable to stop a campus speaker; and 72% say it’s appropriate to “shout down” speakers on controversial topics (like abortion).
The media and the radical Left don’t see anything wrong with this. They think conservatives who get attacked deserve it.
This afternoon, Matthew Dowd with MSNBC blamed Charlie for his own murder, saying:” [He is] constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech, aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which often then to hateful actions.”
Then, Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois said President Trump was to blame somehow.
Even besides all that, I saw something at the University of Montana that made my stomach churn this afternoon. As I informed students at the University of Montana that Charlie, my friend, had been shot, I expected stunned silence from the 150+ students who gathered to debate me.
But the students CHEERED the news that Charlie was shot!
One student even yelled at me, “Yeah! This is WAR!”
The fact is, the people who are to blame are the Leftists who’ve brainwashed young people into thinking that murder is an acceptable way to win an argument. Their goal has always been to intimidate you and me into shutting up.
Charlie understood that American freedom is too valuable to remain silent and let the radical Left destroy our country. So, he fought – and paid the ultimate price for his love of liberty.
Charlie would never be silenced, Pro-Life Friend. And with your continued support and prayers, neither will I.
Please pray for Charlie, his family, and our nation. Pray for our Students for Life leaders who are shocked and horrified . . . and their safety as they continue their brave work on campuses. Pray for my family’s safety and for me as I now have several big decisions I need to make.
And pray that we can end this Culture of Death that champions the death of innocent babies and, now, those with whom they disagree.
