Pro-lifers all over America celebrated the fall of Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Indeed, it was a monumental day, especially for those in the movement who have striven to be the voice of the voiceless since 1973.
Since then many states have successfully been able to enact powerful protective new laws that respect unborn children’s right to life along with laws that expand care for mothers facing difficult pregnancies. All definitely reasons to be glad, but Virginians face another struggle this year, an unlimited abortion amendment to our State Constitution.
Pro-life Virginians are organizing across the state. Multiple organizations, churches and elected officials are coordinating projects and programs that will fight the radical pro-abortion promoters who have pushed the amendment through the General Assembly.

VSHL drew all these groups and people together two years ago as the threat of an amendment was moving through the required legislative process. Thousands of pro-life Virginians came to Richmond in 2025 and 2026 to lobby against the amendment and stand for life. Unfortunately, pro-abortion forces had the votes to pass it two years in a row and now Virginians have one last chance to stop their plans at the polls this fall.
VSHL has seen what has happened in other states where similar amendments have been adopted. Pro-life laws eradicated and new laws prevented by the aggressive legal interpretation of the language included in them. These amendments, like the Virginia one are vaguely written but they all say that no obstacle or impediment may be implemented that prevent access to abortion. This has led the Courts to conclude that 24 hr waiting periods, informed consent laws, and requirements about safety regulations regarding who and where abortions may be performed are impediments and so they have been routinely struck down wherever these dangerous amendments have passed.
VSHL is committed to a public education effort that will help voters understand the threat posed by the unlimited abortion amendment. The first step is to make sure that every Virginian knows that this is on the ballot starting September 18 when early voting begins. The language of ballot measure voters will see is deliberately deceptive and manipulates the true effect of the amendment. Gov. Spanberger signed a bill from the General Assembly that created the ballot language. Now it will be up to concerned Virginians to join the effort to educate friends, family, church members, etc. about why what they will read is not what will happen if the amendment as it passed in the GA becomes a part of the Virginia Constitution.
VSHL has prepared handouts in English and Spanish, and, with the Coalition team, talking points to help folks guide others to understand why a NO VOTE is critical to protecting the women and babies of Virginia. All of the material created can be used in churches, plus there are very helpful tools being created by coalition partners in the two Catholic Dioceses and other pro-life organizations, including the Family Foundation. At fairs, church festivals, political events, townhalls, and family gatherings, members of the VSHL team and coalition partners are spreading the word and helping mobilize voters. This really is a collaboration of Virginians from all over.
So, as the fourth anniversary of the Dobbs Decision passes, Virginia cannot rest or ignore this critical moment. Virginia is already the most permissive state in the South, allowing abortion up to birth with minimal regulations in the last three months of pregnancy. Pro-abortion groups are assisting women from other places to come to the Commonwealth of Virginia to get abortions. Sadly. Pro-lifers do not have enough votes currently in the General Assembly to pass protective pro-life laws, but we do have the power to stop the unlimited abortion amendment that would make it impossible to pass rational, protective laws in the future. That is the order of that day for every concerned Virginian who must VOTE NO for the legacy left for those who come next.
