MSNBC Analyst Matthew Dowd Fired After Saying Charlie Kirk Got Himself Killed

MSNBC has fired political analyst Matthew Dowd after he suggested that the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was a consequence of his own supposedly inflammatory rhetoric, drawing sharp criticism from conservatives who viewed the remarks as callous and irresponsible.

The controversy erupted following a Tuesday segment on MSNBC where its host discussed a hoax claiming Kirk, a prominent pro-life activist and Turning Point USA founder, had been shot by a supporter in celebration.

Then, Dowd speculated that Kirk’s supposed “hate speech” might have incited such an act, stating, “If you’re out there spewing hate, it’s not a surprise that people might react violently.” Dowd pushed this sentiment, adding, “When you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Kirk’s rhetoric has consequences.”

Conservatives swiftly condemned the remarks, arguing they unfairly blamed Kirk for nonexistent hate speech.

Leading conservatives and pro-life advocates called the comments “a disgusting attempt to smear a pro-life leader and justify violence against him.” They demanded accountability, citing Dowd’s remarks as emblematic of media bias against conservative voices.

MSNBC announced Dowd’s termination on Wednesday night, confirming the decision in a brief statement: “Matthew Dowd’s comments do not reflect the values of MSNBC, and we have parted ways with him.” The network did not elaborate further, but sources indicated the decision followed intense backlash from viewers and advocacy groups.

Kirk’s assassination, captured on video during a “Prove Me Wrong” debate at Utah Valley University, marked a grim escalation in political violence.

President Trump, confirming Kirk’s death on Truth Social, described him as a “legendary” figure “loved and admired by ALL, especially me,” and blamed “radical left” rhetoric for the attack.

The pro-life movement mourned Kirk as a tireless defender of the unborn. His organization, Turning Point USA, had galvanized young conservatives to defend life, vote, and educate and persuade others.

Supporters argued that Kirk’s advocacy for life made him a target, with one X post stating, “Charlie Kirk was killed for speaking truth about the sanctity of life.”

As the investigation into Kirk’s assassination continues, pro-life advocates are calling for justice and renewed focus on protecting free speech.
