The Trump administration has called on UN Women, the United Nations entity that routinely promotes the radical abortion agenda, to abandon its advocacy for abortion and gender ideology. Trump is urging a renewed focus on the well-being of women and girls based on biological reality.
In a pointed statement, the United States pressed UN Women to recognize that “women are biologically female, and men are biologically male” and to “focus on its core mandate to promote the success of women and girls.”
The U.S. also expressed strong opposition to what it described as “harmful gender ideology,” asserting it is “detrimental to the well-being of women and girls.”
The remarks came amid growing tensions at the United Nations over the contentious issues of abortion and transgender policies, which pro-life advocates argue have overshadowed the core mission of supporting women’s rights.

The U.S. stance reflects a broader push by the Trump administration to challenge what it sees as ideological overreach by international bodies, particularly on issues related to life and family. The statement from the U.S. delegation aligns with actions taken earlier this year at the UN Commission on the Status of Women, where American diplomats refused to endorse a political declaration due to its inclusion of “gender” terminology.
A U.S. diplomat at the time emphasized the need for “clear and accurate language that women are biologically female, and men are biologically male,” drawing boos from some feminist groups in attendance.
Pro-life organizations, such as the Center for Family and Human Rights (C-Fam), have praised the administration’s position, viewing it as a critical step in redirecting UN Women’s efforts toward protecting the dignity of women and the unborn.
C-Fam, a key player in global pro-life advocacy, has long criticized UN Women for promoting policies that it believes undermine traditional family structures and the sanctity of life. The Trump administration’s decision to halt funding for gender ideology and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has cast a shadow over UN discussions, with some foreign diplomats and UN officials labeling the moves as regressive.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration’s decision to fully defund UNFPA, announced in March and finalized in May, redirected $335 million in taxpayer funds away from the agency. The move builds on Trump’s reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy, renamed the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance Policy (PLGHA), which bars U.S. funding to foreign organizations that perform or promote abortions.
Pro-life advocates have hailed the defunding as a victory for protecting unborn lives and ending U.S. complicity in coercive practices abroad.
“UNFPA’s support of, and involvement in, China’s population-planning activities allows the Chinese government to implement more effectively its program of coercive abortion,” former Secretary of State Colin Powell said in 2008, a sentiment echoed by Trump officials justifying the cuts. The administration pointed to UNFPA’s historical role in supporting China’s former one-child policy, which led to millions of forced abortions and sterilizations, as a key reason for the funding halt.
UNFPA officials expressed dismay at the decision, warning of dire consequences for women in developing nations. The agency has denied direct involvement in coercive practices, though critics, including Reggie Littlejohn of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, argue otherwise.
“UNFPA has been found to be complicit with coercive population control in China in the past, and I have no doubt that any unbiased investigation would find them complicit again,” Littlejohn told LifeNews.
At the same time, pro-life advocates argue that such policies distract from addressing pressing issues like maternal health, education, and economic opportunities for women, particularly in developing nations.
The U.S. call to action follows a pattern of resistance to what pro-life groups describe as an aggressive push for abortion and transgender agendas within UN frameworks.
