Shame on Cardinal Cupich for Awarding the Evil of Abortion

Yesterday afternoon, Cardinal Cupich responded to demands by pro-lifers from across the nation that he rescind his offer to honor Senator Dick Durbin with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity’s upcoming ‘Keep Hope Alive’ fundraiser on November 3rd.

You can read his statement here.

Forgive me for being blunt. This statement is abhorrent.

The killing of the defenseless child in the womb is a grave moral evil.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that a person who formally contributes to the procurement of an abortion commits a grave sin and separates himself/herself from grace.

“Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches a canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life.” CCC 2272

TAKE ACTION: Contact Cardinal Cupich and tell him to rescind Senator Dick Durbin’s award. Or call 312-534-8200.

Make no mistake: the Lord always extends His infinite mercy to those who seek it. Period. That said, it is our mission that no person be confused by the Cardinal’s actions – abortion is a very grave sin.

Cardinal Cupich’s apparent indifference to this reality is scandalous in every sense of the word. His persistent ambiguity on the issue of abortion poses a great risk to all persons who might be affected by a lack of clarity on this issue.

(And that’s all without mentioning that he’s violating his own Archdiocesan policy which prohibits giving awards to individuals with a public stance in opposition to church teaching.)

Dick Durbin’s record on immigration simply does not matter so long as he refuses to acknowledge that it is evil to murder an unborn child. What’s more, his soul is at serious risk for his refusal to oppose abortion in the U.S. Senate.

Illinois Right to Life will proceed with our protest outside of the ‘Keep Hope Alive’ fundraiser on November 3rd and we intend to work with local, state, and national pro-life organizations to bring clarity to this highly scandalous event.

This is incredibly important. I really hope you’ll join me on November 3rd.
