Pope Leo XIV announced he will proclaim St. John Henry Newman a doctor of the church on Nov. 1 during the Jubilee of the World of Education. The pope said St. Newman “contributed decisively to the renewal of theology and to the understanding of the development of Christian doctrine.” Before St. Newman was canonized by Pope Francis Oct. 13, 2019, there were calls for him to be named one of the three dozen doctors of the church — men and women saints, from both the Christian East and West, who are honored for particularly important contributions to theology and spirituality.
