The Italian fertility rate sank to 1.18 children per woman, well below the 2.1 needed for population replacement, leaving nearly a quarter of Italians over 65 and schools shuttering for lack of pupils.
“This requires commitment to promoting choices at various levels in favor of the family, supporting its efforts, promoting its values, protecting its needs and rights,” Leo said, evoking the sacred bonds eroded by policies that prioritize convenience over children.
