Woman Who Regrets Her Abortion: When I Hear a Baby Cry, “It’s Like a Knife Turning in My Heart”

From a post-abortive woman named Bernadette:

“I became pregnant in my late teens, and 10 weeks into the pregnancy I had an abortion. A trusted doctor assured me that the procedure would be simple, effective, with no aftereffects. I was never told that abortion would lead to deep depression, that every time I heard a baby cry it was like a knife turning in my heart. Abortion is supposed to be a quick fix for an unwanted pregnancy, but there is no quick fix for regret, grief and the pain of loss. The most powerful witnesses for the humanity of the unborn are not scientists, but mothers who mourn. We women are not crying over products of conception. We are crying over the deaths of our children.”

I had an abortion at ten weeks.” Love Them Both.
