After nearly 40 years in Washington’s inner circle, Nancy Pelosi is finally calling it a career.
The former House Speaker and Democratic powerhouse announced Thursday she will not seek reelection, officially closing the book on one of the most polarizing — and powerful — runs in congressional history.
“I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” Pelosi, 85, said in a video message to constituents.
The announcement follows days of speculation that Pelosi, a fixture of Democratic politics since the Reagan era, was preparing to bow out after Tuesday’s off-year elections.
Pelosi became the first woman to wield the Speaker’s gavel, serving two separate stints — from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023 — while leading House Democrats from 2002 to 2022.
Her exit marks the end of an era for Democrats and the California political machine that defined her rise.
Love her or loathe her, Pelosi’s four-decade reign on Capitol Hill is over — and the power vacuum she leaves behind will be one to watch.
