The former Hope Medical Group for Women, a Shreveport abortion facility that shuttered its doors five years ago amid the coronavirus pandemic, was demolished Wednesday
The tearing down of the killing facility marks a symbolic end to its operations in a state that has since become a stronghold for pro-life protections.
The demolition of the abortion center, once the last remaining abortion business in northwest Louisiana, drew a crowd of pro-life advocates who gathered to witness the site’s transformation.
The closure in March 2020 came after Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and the state Department of Health issued emergency guidelines postponing all non-essential surgeries to curb the spread of COVID-19 and conserve personal protective equipment for hospitals. Abortions, deemed non-emergency under the order, fell under the mandate, leading to the shutdown of all three abortion facilities operating in the state at the time.

Hope Medical Group for Women, the only such facility in Shreveport, informed a local woman via telephone that it was closing but planned to “fight the law,” according to Benjamin Clapper, executive director of Louisiana Right to Life.
The statewide pause made Louisiana the first abortion-free state in the U.S., a milestone celebrated by pro-life groups as a temporary but impactful victory during the public health crisis.
“This new rule that applies across the board to all medical and surgical procedures is consistent with that life-saving goal,” Clapper said at the time
The facility’s permanent closure followed years of legal battles and legislative efforts to restrict abortions in Louisiana, where state laws now ban killing babies in nearly all cases, with limited exceptions.
Louisiana Right to Life applauded the destruction of the abortion building.
“After years of prayers and peaceful protests outside of the Shreveport abortion clinic, the walls came crumbling down! We are so grateful that this institution built on harming moms and unborn babies is no longer standing in our state!” it said.
The demolition comes on the heels of another major pro-life milestone in Louisiana: the exit of Planned Parenthood from the state. The organization announced in August that it would close its final two facilities in New Orleans and Baton Rouge effective Sept. 30, 2025, leaving Louisiana entirely free of the abortion company’s presence.
