Woman Throws Newborn Baby Boy in the Trash With Umbilical Cord Still Attached

A 28-year-old Bronx woman faces child abandonment charges after reportedly throwing her newborn baby in the trash.

The mother allegedly placed what is believed to be her newborn son, still connected to his umbilical cord, inside a garbage bag and leaving him outside an apartment door.

The infant, discovered conscious and alert around 12:10 p.m. Wednesday in the Olinville section on East 223rd Street near White Plains Road, was wrapped in a blanket and stuffed into the trash bag in front of a resident’s door.

A 71-year-old woman living in the unit made the grim find and immediately called 911, prompting New York Police Department officers to rush the boy in their cruiser to Montefiore Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Claudette Tinnin was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, acting in a manner injurious to a child and abandonment of a child.

She was hospitalized Thursday and awaiting arraignment, prosecutors said.

It was not immediately clear where or when Tinnin gave birth to the boy.

The case has drawn renewed attention to the vulnerability of newborns in New York City, where safe haven laws allow parents to surrender infants at designated locations without fear of prosecution. Yet advocates for the unborn decry such incidents as preventable tragedies that underscore the urgent need for comprehensive support for expectant mothers facing crises.

This marks the second such shocking abandonment of a newborn in the city in less than a month.

On October 20, a 30-year-old Queens woman gave birth to a baby girl and left her on a subway platform during morning rush hour, still attached to her umbilical cord and wrapped only in a blanket on the dirty ground.

The infant was discovered minutes later on the southbound platform of the 1 train — one of the city’s busiest transit hubs teeming with commuters — wrapped only in a blanket and placed directly on the dirty ground. The newborn was conscious, alert and crying when a passerby spotted her, still connected to her umbilical cord.

Assa Diawara, 30, was arrested near her home in Jamaica, Queens, and charged with abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

According to authorities, Diawara admitted to giving birth to the baby girl and leaving her at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway stop during Monday morning’s rush-hour chaos.

Officers rushed the girl to Bellevue Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition and placed under protective care.

Both babies, now safe in medical care, represent small miracles of survival amid unthinkable acts of desperation.
