Throughout his campaign, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani pledged free bus service for all New Yorkers. Now, with the election behind him, the question turns to cost — and it remains unclear whether his signature policy can be funded at all.
During a sitdown interview this week, PIX11’s Dan Mannarino pressed Mamdani on where the money would come from if Gov. Kathy Hochul refuses to raise taxes.
Mamdani pointed to what he called the “clearest ways” to fund the plan: a higher corporate tax and a new income tax on millionaires.
“The most important fact is that we fund it, not the question of how we do it, but that we do it,” Mamdani said, raising eyebrows.

His campaign proposal includes raising the top state corporate tax to 11.5% and adding a 2% New York City income tax for anyone earning more than $1 million.
But Gov. Hochul already rejected similar tax hikes earlier this year, saying she is “not raising taxes on people at a time when affordability is the big issue.”
Still, Mamdani defended his plan this week, posting on X that “Free buses are an investment in our people and our economy — helping workers, small businesses, and every New Yorker who deserves a more connected city.”

The mayor-elect says funding is a matter of commitment — not logistics. Taxpayers may see that differently.
Mamdani heads to Washington D.C. on Friday to meet with President Trump.
