A new memo has revealed advisers warned former President Joe Biden that his immigration plans could lead to “chaos” at the US border.
His team doled out the advice to Biden when he was still campaigning against President Trump back in 2020, the New York Times reported.
“A potential surge could create chaos and a humanitarian crisis, overwhelm processing capacities and imperil the agenda of the new administration,” Biden’s advisers wrote.
The memo warned that a major surge was possible, citing Biden’s expected policy approach, a backlog that carried over from the Trump administration, and COVID-related pressures.
It outlined steps Biden, now 83, could take to blunt an influx of illegal migrants — including tightening the standards for immigration claims, holding asylum seekers in “reception centers” until hearings, and transferring them to other countries.
Biden ultimately chose not to adopt the recommendations.
After he took office, policy advisers continued to press for tougher measures to curb border crossings and strengthen enforcement. Their warnings were again set aside after senior aides argued that a crackdown could alienate progressive voters and that immigration was not a top concern for Americans outside border regions.
Within Biden’s first three months in office, border crossings had already exceeded any record from the Trump years.
Advisers also proposed that federal officials help local governments transport migrants to their final destinations in the U.S. to relieve pressure on border towns.
