The lawsuit is filed. The apology is on record. And now, the BBC is preparing for a full-blown legal fight with the president.
The BBC announced early Tuesday that it plans to fight President Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit stemming from a controversial documentary about his Jan. 6, 2021 speech.
The lawsuit follows intense scrutiny of a 2024 Panorama documentary that critics say misleadingly edited Trump’s remarks by omitting his call for supporters to protest peacefully.
Trump sued the BBC on Monday for defamation and for violating Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act — seeking $5 billion for each claim. The suit, filed in the Southern District of Florida, names both BBC and BBC Studios Productions as defendants and was brought by Trump in his personal capacity.
While ABC and CBS have both settled with Trump in recent years, the BBC is taking a different approach.
“As we have made clear previously, we will be defending this case. We are not going to make further comment on ongoing legal proceedings,” a BBC spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
Trump’s legal team — attorneys Alejandro Brito, Edward Paltzik and Daniel Epstein — argues the network crossed a line and pushed a political agenda.
“The formerly respected and now disgraced BBC defamed President Trump by intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring his speech in a brazen attempt to interfere in the 2024 Presidential Election,” a spokesperson for Trump’s legal team said. “The BBC has a long pattern of deceiving its audience in coverage of President Trump, all in service of its own leftist political agenda. President Trump’s powerhouse lawsuit is holding the BBC accountable for its defamation and reckless election interference just as he has held other fake news mainstream media responsible for their wrongdoing.”
The BBC has previously apologized for the edit and pulled the program from its platforms. But the network is still rejecting the core claim.
“While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim,” a spokesperson said.
