Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is in serious trouble.
After a viral video from independent journalist Nick Shirley ripped the lid off what he claims is a sprawling Somali aid fraud scheme, Governor Walz is now scrambling to explain how millions in taxpayer funds were funneled through questionable programs and shuttered sites.
His spokesperson insisted to Fox News that Walz has been cracking down for years, saying the governor “has worked for years to crack down on fraud and ask the state legislature for more authority to take aggressive action. He has strengthened oversight — including launching investigations into these specific facilities, one of which was already closed.”
The spokesperson added that Walz has “hired an outside firm to audit payments to high-risk programs, shut down the Housing Stabilization Services program entirely, announced a new statewide program integrity director, and supported criminal prosecutions.”
But the 43-minute viral video is doing the talking. Shirley and a Minnesotan named David drove across Minneapolis, visiting child-care and learning centers allegedly tied to Somali immigrants.
What they found were buildings shuttered, doors locked, staff refusing questions — and one site with a misspelled sign reading “Quality Learing Center.” That “learning center” is supposed to serve at least 99 children and has taken in roughly $4 million in state funds, according to the video.
Shirley took his findings to Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show, saying the alleged scheme is so blatant “a kindergartner could figure out there is fraud going on.” He didn’t mince words: “Fraud is fraud, and we work too hard simply just to be paying taxes and enabling fraud to be happening.”
His warning was blunt and furious: “There better be change… investigations have been launched just from that video alone… we work way too hard to be paying taxes and not knowing where our money’s going.”
