Polls Show Republicans Care More About Abortion Than Democrats

Recent polls reveal that Republicans are holding firm in their concern over abortion, even as Democrats show a marked decline in prioritizing killing babies in abortions ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The data is signaling a potential advantage for pro-life advocates in key state battles.

According to polling by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), the importance of abortion to Democratic voters dropped significantly from 55% in 2024 to 36% in October 2025. In contrast, the issue remained consistently important to Republicans over the same period.

This partisan divide comes as a separate September 2025 poll by The 19th and SurveyMonkey found that voters who care most about abortion are those who want to see it banned, underscoring the intensity of pro-life sentiment.

PRRI’s CEO, Melissa Deckman, attributed the shift among Democrats to broader concerns: “Abortion… has been replaced as a top issue by affordability and the economy. That seems to be first and foremost for everyone. But it’s also, for Democrats, the state of democracy writ large. We consistently find that Democrats are more concerned about the health of democracy.”

The waning Democrat focus on abortion follows a Gallup poll from earlier in 2025 that showed Americans edging toward more pro-life views overall.

In that survey, 43% of respondents identified as “pro-life,” a two percentage point increase from the previous year. There were also small gains in the percentage of people who thought abortion was “morally wrong” and those who believed it should be “illegal” or “legal in only a few circumstances.”

The Gallup data highlighted deepening partisan differences, with Republicans becoming less supportive of legal abortion in recent years.
