Hundreds of Virginians are in Richmond this week to speak up for Life. If you can’t be there, please send a message to your legislator, regardless of how they voted last year on the Amendment.
Pro-abortion forces in the newly-elected 2026 General Assembly have vowed to make passage of the so called “Reproductive Freedom Act” their highest priority. The likelihood is that they will push through a vote on it in the very first days of the 2026 session, which begins today. The amendment has already completed the first step required under Virginia law: it passed the GA in 2025. Now it will get a second vote and if it passes again, it will become a ballot referendum measure at some point in 2026.
It is imperative that even though it appears that there are sufficient pro-abortion votes in the new House of Delegates and the VA Senate to pass it, the voices of pro-life Virginians must still be heard. This is especially important if you have a new Delegate! They need to know that Virginians care deeply about this matter. Also, the numbers in the Senate are still very tight. If even one Senator who voted for it last year can be convinced to change their vote and oppose the amendment it would force a tie and thereby stop the resolution. Remember, on this question the Lieutenant Governor cannot vote to break a tie.
The situation is critical. If the Amendment becomes law it will most certainly lock Virginia is a terrible situation. We will become a permanent destination for abortion through all nine months of pregnancy for women from all over the South. It will remove the opportunity and responsibility of our legislators to pass even the most sensible regulations and will put women as well as their babies in harms’ way. The interpretation of the amendment by the courts will also likely force medical personnel to participate in abortion activity or quit their practices. Perhaps most alarming could be court challenges to Virginia’s Parental Consent law which will put minor girls in the hands of unscrupulous abortionists.
