Pope Leo XIV today met with the parents and families of the victims of the Crans-Montana fire, expressing profound closeness as he shared in their sorrow after a tragedy that struck without warning and caused immense suffering. In his remarks, the Pope emphasized that in the face of such pain there is only one word capable of truly rekindling hope: the word spoken by Christ on the Cross. Recalling Jesus’ cry, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”, he pointed to the Father’s response in the Resurrection, which followed “three days of silence.”
