According to a Fox News report, a House ethics panel just took a major step toward what could become one of the most dramatic expulsions in years.
A bipartisan subcommittee found Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) guilty of nearly all alleged violations tied to a sweeping scandal involving campaign funds and disaster relief money.
The decision, approved through a motion for summary judgment, effectively concludes that the bulk of the case against the Florida Democrat has already been proven.

The ruling followed a rare public ethics hearing — the first of its kind since 2010 — where lawmakers from both parties pressed her legal team for more than six hours.
And the findings were sweeping.
“Counts 1–15 and 17–26…had been proven,” the panel said, signaling that the overwhelming majority of allegations cleared the bar.
Those allegations include using ineligible funds to support campaign activity, filing false financial disclosures, and seeking special favors tied to earmark funding.
Cherfilus-McCormick is also facing a separate federal criminal indictment tied to the same broader set of claims, raising the stakes even higher as the House weighs next steps.
The ethics process now moves to the punishment phase.
The panel is expected to reconvene after the Easter recess to recommend disciplinary action, with expulsion firmly on the table.
Rep. Greg Steube has already vowed to force the issue, pledging to push forward a resolution to remove her from Congress regardless of the panel’s recommendation.
But expulsion is no easy lift.
It requires a two-thirds vote in the House, meaning Republicans would need Democratic support to remove one of their own. So far, Democratic leadership has largely stood by Cherfilus-McCormick, even as pressure builds inside their own ranks.
Some Democrats are beginning to signal unease.
“The allegations before us are extremely serious,” said Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, warning that the case goes beyond one lawmaker and speaks to public trust in Congress itself.
