James Fishback, a fourth-generation Floridian, is running to be the state’s 47th governor, replacing term-limited Ron DeSantis. Campaigning on a hardline America First platform, Fishback’s pitch to Floridians features banning abortion, cracking down on AI, stopping foreign influence, slashing government, and even placing a “sin tax” on pornography.
“Legislating morality is absolutely essential,” Fishback told The New American’s Andrew Muller in an exclusive interview. For the 31-year-old, that morality is rooted in the Christian faith, which he boasts in chanting “Christ is King” at nearly every campaign stop.
Fishback has introduced a unique blend of America First politics wrapped in Gen. Z linguistics while simultaneously quoting Founding Fathers and constitutional provisions. “The federal government did not create the states,” he said in support of federalism and state nullification of federal overreach. “We created the federal government. And so, my view is that nullification should always be on the table.”
On the Iran War and foreign policy, Fishback claims the conflict is not in America’s interest and is a betrayal of the MAGA coalition. If he were governor, he explained, Florida’s 12,000 National Guardsmen would never be sent to fight foreign wars without congressional approval. Foreign governments, he continued, have a stranglehold on American politics, which he hopes to put a stop to in the Sunshine State.
Fishback is slated to debate Trump-endorsed Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) June 26-27 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ahead of the August 18 Republican primary.
