CIA used “Ghost Murmur” technology to locate and rescue downed U.S. airman in Iran

A cutting-edge piece of U.S. intelligence technology may have just changed the future of battlefield rescues.

According to sources familiar with the operation, the CIA deployed a classified system known as “Ghost Murmur” to locate and rescue a downed American airman hiding in southern Iran.

The tool, described as a breakthrough in long-range sensing, uses quantum magnetometry to detect the faint electromagnetic signature of a human heartbeat — then applies artificial intelligence to isolate that signal from environmental noise.

“It’s like hearing a voice in a stadium, except the stadium is a thousand square miles of desert,” a source briefed on the program said. “In the right conditions, if your heart is beating, we will find you.”

The system’s first known operational use came during the high-stakes rescue of a U.S. weapons systems officer — identified only as “Dude 44 Bravo” — after his F-15 was shot down.

Wounded and alone, the airman reportedly survived for two days in rugged terrain, hiding in a mountain crevice while Iranian forces searched the area. The barren landscape, sources said, made for an “ideal” testing ground for the technology.

“Ghost Murmur” was developed by Skunk Works, the secretive advanced projects division of Lockheed Martin, according to individuals familiar with the program.

The system has reportedly been tested aboard Black Hawk helicopter platforms and could eventually be integrated into advanced aircraft like the F-35 Lightning II.

Officials hinted at the breakthrough during a White House briefing Monday, where President Donald Trump and CIA Director John Ratcliffe referenced new capabilities without disclosing specifics.

The name itself reflects the mission.

“Murmur” is a clinical term tied to heart rhythms. “Ghost” captures the idea of finding someone who has effectively vanished.
