On Wednesday, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin told Senator Patty Murray at an EPA budget hearing that he knew nothing about abortion-related contaminants in the nation’s water supply even though Liberty Counsel Action (LCA) has met with him personally and informed him of the issue.
Since May 2025, LCA has elevated the issue of abortion-related contaminants in the nation’s water supply to the highest levels of the federal government through LCA’s initiative: “Abortion in Our Water” (AIOW).

Sen. Murray noted that pro-life activists have an audience at the EPA and asked Administrator Zeldin whether he believed there is “abortion in the water.”
Zeldin answered, “I have not had a conversation with anyone at the agency as far as abortions in water. I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”
However, Liberty Counsel Vice President of Governmental Affairs Jonathan Alexandre spoke with Zeldin on September 17, 2025, where he handed Zeldin LCA’s 98-page special report and explained the issue. In addition, LCA representatives engaged other EPA officials and staff about the AIOW initiative through several meetings and phone calls from May to October 2025.
In each of these engagements, the EPA acknowledged the environmental concerns related to the abortion pill, such as human fetal remains and potentially active “endocrine disruptors” from Mifepristone being flushed into the nation’s water systems where they may not be filtered out by conventional wastewater treatment plants.
Liberty Counsel Action President John Stemberger said, “Liberty Counsel Action has met with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin personally and informed him of the environmental dangers of chemical abortion to our water supply. Other pro-life organizations have as well. We are grateful for the high-level engagements at the EPA, but there is no excuse for Administrator Zeldin to say he doesn’t know about the issue. After engagement from LCA, other pro-life organizations, and the U.S. Senate, ignorance on behalf of Administrator Zeldin seems like an intentional choice rather than a negligent oversight. He owes an explanation for his remarks, and more transparency from the EPA is needed to ensure this critical environmental issue is getting the attention and action it deserves.”
According to Students for Life of America/Students for Life Action (SFLA/SFLAction), Zeldin received an additional brief on abortion-contaminated water.
SFLA/SFLAction President Kristan Hawkins stated the “ridiculous claim that the issue of abortion water pollution was unknown to Administrator Zeldin doesn’t pass the straight face test as I was in the room with his staff as we discussed it and know about the many people who also raised the issued.”
