A tense standoff outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center ended with police moving in and making arrests Sunday night after anti-ICE protesters refused to comply with a newly imposed city curfew.
The Department of Homeland Security applauded the law enforcement response and issued a blunt warning to demonstrators.
“There is zero tolerance for rioters,” DHS said in a series of posts on X while sharing videos that appeared to show police detaining individuals at the scene.

“If you riot, you will face the consequences. Law and order prevails,” the agency added.

Authorities have not yet released an official count of how many people were detained or arrested during the operation.
Video from the scene showed New Jersey State Police officers in riot gear surrounding a group of agitators and ordering them to disperse after Newark’s curfew took effect. Officers formed a tightening perimeter around the crowd while issuing commands and directing members of the media toward designated exit routes.
As police advanced, some demonstrators could be heard chanting, “Hands up, don’t shoot!”
Law enforcement officials announced that credentialed members of the press would be allowed to leave before enforcement actions began. After media members exited the area, police moved in on those who remained.
According to reports from the scene, roughly 20 agitators were arrested after refusing to leave.
The crackdown followed a decision earlier in the day by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka to impose a nightly curfew from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. until further notice.
Baraka cited an increasingly volatile situation surrounding Delaney Hall and growing concerns about public safety.
In announcing the curfew, the mayor said the city had already seen multiple arrests involving individuals allegedly found in possession of weapons during demonstrations near the detention facility over the past week.
