Rep. Al Green Sparks Backlash After Telling DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin To ‘Shut Up’ During Heated Hearing

Another Capitol Hill hearing turned into political theater Wednesday when longtime anti-Trump Democrat Al Green exploded at Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin during a heated exchange that instantly went viral online.

The confrontation erupted after Green accused Mullin of racism while referencing a prior protest involving a sign reading “black people aren’t apes.” When Mullin attempted to respond, Green repeatedly tried to silence him.

“Shut up,” Green snapped during the hearing.

The moment quickly spread across social media, with conservatives blasting the Texas Democrat’s conduct as unhinged and emblematic of a Democratic Party increasingly defined by outrage politics rather than substantive arguments.

The official account for the Republican National Committee reposted video of the exchange and labeled the moment “UNHINGED.”

Green continued escalating during the hearing as he accused Mullin and Republicans of targeting his protest over racial animus.

“A racist would depict people of color as apes. A racist would take offense at a peaceful protest,” Green said while holding up a photograph tied to the earlier incident.

But when Mullin tried defending himself, Green repeatedly attempted to cut him off.

“Reclaiming my time. Ask him to shut up. It’s my time. Tell him to shut up,” Green demanded from the chair.

The viral clash immediately fueled fresh criticism of Green, who has built a national profile through repeated impeachment efforts against Donald Trump and a string of headline-grabbing protests targeting the administration.

Green has introduced multiple impeachment resolutions against Trump over the years and has frequently called on Democrats to become more confrontational in opposing the president’s agenda.

The Texas congressman also made headlines earlier this year after being removed again from a presidential address following another protest demonstration.

Now, however, Green’s political future appears increasingly uncertain.

The 80-year-old congressman recently lost a Democratic primary to freshman Rep. Christian Menefee after redistricting forced the two Democrats into the same congressional race in Texas’ 18th District.

Conservative commentators seized on Wednesday’s exchange as another example of what they say is a Democratic Party spiraling into anger and spectacle following Trump’s political resurgence.

“This is the modern Democratic Party in one clip,” conservative commentator Benny Johnson wrote on X.

“No respect. No argument. No facts. No substance. Just ‘shut up’ and a temper tantrum.”

The influential conservative account Libs of TikTok similarly mocked Green’s outburst, calling the congressman an “unhinged lunatic” and celebrating his electoral defeat.
