Federal Prosecutors Launch California Election Fraud Investigations Amid Slow Vote Count

Los Angeles’ top federal prosecutor announced Friday that multiple election fraud investigations are underway in California as frustration mounts over the state’s sluggish ballot-counting process.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said his office is coordinating with the FBI and Department of Justice on several ongoing probes tied to alleged election law violations.

“California’s election system has serious structural vulnerabilities,” Essayli wrote on X.

“Universal vote-by-mail with no voter ID requirements creates conditions where fraud can go undetected and unpunished, eroding public confidence.”

Essayli said his office is pursuing “multiple election fraud investigations” alongside the FBI’s Los Angeles field office and vowed to prosecute any federal election crimes uncovered.

“We will follow the evidence wherever it leads and prosecute any violations of federal election law to the fullest extent,” he wrote.

Essayli also revealed that his office is working with Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon and the DOJ Civil Rights Division on what he described as a “comprehensive audit” of California’s voter rolls.

“The state has stonewalled every effort to verify that only eligible US citizens are registered to vote,” Essayli wrote, noting the legal fight is now before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal.

“My office will not look the other way. We will investigate and prosecute. Every legal vote deserves to be counted. Every illegal vote cancels one out.”

Dhillon quickly amplified the announcement on social media.

The federal announcement comes one day after President Donald Trump accused Democrats of “trying to steal” California’s gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral primaries and called for an investigation into the state’s slow-moving vote count.

Questions surrounding California’s election administration intensified this week as vote-count totals slowed dramatically across Los Angeles County.

According to county officials, just 77,521 additional ballots were processed between election night on June 2 and Wednesday evening, despite an estimated 713,180 ballots still left outstanding.

The California Post reported Thursday that numerous work stations inside the county’s massive 144,000-square-foot ballot processing facility appeared empty during a visit to the site.

Essayli also pointed Friday to what he described as recent “evidence of election fraud in California,” referencing charges filed in May against a Los Angeles woman accused of paying homeless people on Skid Row to register to vote as part of a yearslong illegal petition signature scheme.
