Coast Guard Intercepts Overcrowded Migrant Vessel Carrying 240 Near Turks and Caicos

An overcrowded migrant vessel carrying 240 people and reportedly taking on water was intercepted near the Turks and Caicos Islands after U.S. and Caribbean authorities scrambled to prevent what could have become a maritime catastrophe.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the operation unfolded Sunday roughly 15 miles south of the Turks and Caicos Islands after authorities received reports of “an unlawful migrant voyage” in distress.

According to the agency, the packed vessel was carrying migrants who claimed Haitian nationality.

Video released by the Coast Guard showed responding crews working alongside local authorities to stabilize, secure and tow the dangerously overcrowded boat.

The operation involved a major multi-agency response that included the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations, and the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

More than 140 personnel participated in the mission.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force later assumed custody of both the vessel and the migrants onboard, according to the Coast Guard.

“The successful interdiction and safe removal of these individuals from a perilous situation was made possible by the close collaboration and swift response of the Coast Guard, CBP AMO personnel, and authorities from the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Lt. Chelsea Garcia, deputy director of Coast Guard Operations Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, said in a statement.

Garcia warned that maritime smuggling voyages remain extraordinarily dangerous because they frequently involve overcrowded, poorly equipped boats unfit for open water.

“These journeys are extremely hazardous, frequently involving severely overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels that are often taking on water and lack basic life-saving equipment,” she said.

Garcia also urged would-be migrants to pursue “safe, legal, and orderly avenues” rather than risking deadly sea crossings.

The Department of Homeland Security amplified footage from the operation on social media and issued a blunt warning aimed at illegal migrants attempting to enter the United States by sea.

“OUR BORDERS ARE CLOSED,” DHS wrote on X.

“Whether by land or sea — if you try to enter our nation illegally, we will hunt you down and find you.”
