As the years go by and the Dobbs ruling allowing states to protect babies from abortions ages, the initial anger the Supreme Court ruling produced has subsided more and more. The polling result help confirm that Americans and more and more comfortable with the ruling the longer they see abortion bans don’t stop legitimate health care or hurt women.
The decline in moral acceptance of abortion came as Gallup reported falling acceptability ratings for several other behaviors. Birth control, gambling and cloning animals have all hit record lows this year.
Abortion’s moral acceptability rating now stands below those for birth control (83%), divorce (74%), sex between unmarried people (65%), gay or lesbian relations (62%), medical research using stem cells from human embryos (59%), having a baby outside of marriage (58%), gambling (57%), buying clothing made of animal fur (57%) and the death penalty (52%).
It remains higher than views on sex between teenagers (35%) and cloning animals (27%).
Gallup’s analysis noted the broader trend: “Over the past two decades, Americans have grown generally more accepting of most of the behaviors measured by Gallup, which include those associated with sex, marriage, and certain medical and end-of-life issues. However, this trend toward more permissive attitudes has largely plateaued or pulled back in recent years, though acceptance levels on most behaviors remain higher than they were 25 years ago.”
Views on abortion remain deeply divided along partisan lines.
Democrats are 55 percentage points more likely than Republicans to find abortion morally acceptable.
These findings are from Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs poll, conducted May 1-17. The poll has asked Americans the same question about a range of behaviors annually since 2001.
