1 dead, at least 9 injured in active shooting and barricade situation in Midland, Texas

At least one person is dead and multiple others were injured on Friday during an active shooting situation in downtown Midland, Texas where authorities said the suspected gunman barricaded themselves inside a building as heavily armed officers flooded the area.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said during a press conference that there were 11 victims in total as law enforcement worked to contain the situation.

The shooting began around 8 a.m. local time, according to authorities, with responding officers reportedly hearing gunfire coming from inside a building near West Wall Street.

Police later established a perimeter as armored vehicles and tactical teams moved into position.

Midland Memorial Hospital confirmed it received nine victims from the shooting.

Hospital officials said four patients were taken into surgery while five others were listed in stable condition.

The hospital’s main campus was temporarily placed on lockdown for nearly two hours before restrictions were lifted for most of the facility. The emergency department remained locked down Friday afternoon.

The FBI confirmed agents from its Midland satellite office responded to assist local authorities.

Officials have not yet released details about the suspect, a possible motive, or how many people may have been struck by gunfire during the incident.

Witnesses near the scene described hearing dozens of shots as police deployed robots and armored units around the barricaded suspect. Roads in the area were closed while officers secured nearby businesses and medical facilities.
