They may be funding her campaign, but they don’t live in the district.
According to a New York Post report, more than 60% of the roughly $350,000 raised by Mamdani-backed congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier during the latest fundraising period came from out-of-state donors, despite her campaign branding itself as “100% powered by the people.”
Federal filings show Chevalier, who is challenging longtime Manhattan and Bronx Rep. Adriano Espaillat in next year’s Democratic primary, pulled in more than $80,000 from California donors alone.

Among her contributors was Saikat Chakrabarti, the former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and a failed congressional candidate himself, who donated $7,500.
Chevalier’s fundraising received a noticeable boost after socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani endorsed her campaign on May 28. Roughly $118,000 — about one-third of her April 1 to June 3 haul — arrived after the endorsement was announced.
The Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate has also faced questions over campaign contributions tied to the real estate industry.
While pledging not to accept corporate real estate money, filings show she took in more than $8,000 from individuals connected to the sector, including $3,500 donations from Long Island builder Syed M. Razvi and real estate broker Faraz Khan.
More than half of Chevalier’s recent fundraising haul came from donors giving at least $2,500, underscoring the role of large-dollar contributors in her campaign.
The latest filing represents roughly one-third of the Florida native’s total fundraising since launching her campaign last October. Chevalier has now raised approximately $930,000 overall.
Espaillat, meanwhile, remains the fundraising leader in the race. The incumbent brought in more than $740,000 during the same reporting period and has raised just over $2 million so far this cycle.
