Planned Parenthood Will Close Iowa Abortion Biz

Planned Parenthood’s abortion business in Iowa will shrink to a single abortion center after it closes its Iowa City location at the end of July.

The organization announced the shutdown of the Iowa City abortion facility effective July 31, 2026, as part of a restructuring prompted by federal funding cuts and Iowa’s 2024 law banning most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Four other Planned Parenthood clinics in the state closed last year in Ames, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City and Urbandale. After the Iowa City closure, only the Des Moines location will remain open.

Ruth Richardson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of North Central States, said in a video statement: “We are not the cause of these conditions, but we are responsible for how we respond. We will continue to adapt, continue to serve and continue to fight to ensure people can get the care they need no matter what.”

Meanwhile, pro-life advocates welcomed the latest closure as further progress toward ending abortion in Iowa.

Maggie DeWitte, a spokesperson for Pulse Life Advocates, said: “We don’t need abortion in our state and so I am very happy and I feel very blessed that I live in this state because we’re just one step closer to eliminating abortion here in Iowa.”

DeWitte also urged the federal government to prevent out-of-state abortion companies from prescribing and mailing abortion pills to Iowa and other states with restrictions.

A new state law taking effect July 1 bans mail-order abortions to save babies and protect women from dangerous abortion pills.

Nationally, Planned Parenthood killed a record 434,450 babies in abortions during its most recent fiscal year, an 8 percent increase, while receiving $832 million in taxpayer funding. Over the past 25 years, the organization has ended the lives of nearly 8 million unborn children through abortion.
