A single American flag is being carried nonstop from the California coast to Washington, D.C., in a 3,016-mile relay that organizers say will wrap up just in time for July 4 fireworks on the National Mall.
The Relay for America effort launched June 14 — Flag Day — from Rodeo Beach near San Francisco. Runners have been passing the flag hand-to-hand, 24 hours a day, through 15 states. The nonstop handoff is scheduled to reach the capital early July 4, ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations.
Each of the 3,016 miles is dedicated to a different veteran, nominated by members of the public. Organizers say more than 2,500 runners from all 50 states have signed up for segments along the route.
