Anti-Jewish Hate Crimes Surge in Mamdani’s New York City

Violent crime is falling across New York City. Hate is not.

Hate crimes have jumped 9.4% under Mayor Zohran Mamdani this year, with Jewish New Yorkers targeted in more than half of all confirmed incidents, according to unsettling new NYPD statistics released Monday.

The city recorded 360 hate crimes through the latest reporting period, up from 329 during the same stretch last year. Thirty-three incidents were confirmed in July alone.

Anti-Jewish offenses accounted for 56.9% of the citywide total, even though Jewish residents represent approximately 10% of New York City’s population.

The NYPD has recorded 205 anti-Jewish hate crimes so far this year, an 8.5% increase from the 189 reported during the same period last year.

The surge creates an ugly contrast with the otherwise encouraging crime picture across the five boroughs.

All seven major crime categories declined, while murders and shootings continued falling to levels the NYPD described as historic. Shootings dropped 21.3% in July and decreased in every borough.

The city recorded 59 shooting incidents during the month, down 75% from the 243 reported in July 2020. Year-to-date shootings also fell 7.5%, with 381 incidents compared with 771 during the first seven months of 2020.

Murders dropped 32.3% in July and 22.8% year to date.

Burglary, auto theft, robbery, grand larceny and felony assault also declined between 0.4% and 25.3% for the year.

“This summer, the NYPD was called upon to manage an unprecedented series of major and overlapping events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

“Through it all, even as the demands on this department reached historic levels, the men and women of the NYPD delivered double-digit declines in major crime and record lows in violent crime across the city,” she continued.

Tisch credited “our data-driven precision policing policy and the tireless work of the members of the NYPD whose long hours and dedication continue to make New York City safer.”

That success makes the hate-crime surge even harder for City Hall to explain away.

Mamdani has faced repeated condemnation from Jewish leaders and political critics over his anti-Israel rhetoric. The new statistics do not establish that the mayor’s language caused any particular crime, but they raise the stakes surrounding accusations that his political posturing is deepening hostility toward the city’s Jewish community.

A mayor cannot personally prevent every hateful act. He can, however, decide whether his words cool tensions or inflame them.

Mamdani has spent considerable political capital attacking Israel and its leaders. Jewish New Yorkers now have every right to ask how much urgency he will devote to protecting them at home.

The NYPD is driving down violence. City Hall has yet to drive down hate.
