NBC’s Steve Kornacki has stared down some brutal election nights.
Wisconsin nearly broke him.
The network’s famously tireless numbers guru was visibly exasperated Tuesday night as a razor-thin Democratic gubernatorial primary — eventually won by Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley over Democratic socialist Francesca Hong — dragged on deep into the night due to a Milwaukee election-results snafu.

And Kornacki’s reactions quickly became almost as entertaining as the race itself.
The trouble came as election officials were preparing to report roughly 28,000 absentee ballots from Milwaukee, potentially enough to decide the neck-and-neck contest.
Officials discovered that five of nine flash drives brought to Milwaukee’s central count contained audit logs instead of the actual election-results files, forcing workers to retrieve and upload the correct data and delaying the final tally. Election officials blamed human error.
That was apparently one twist too many for Kornacki.
“Are you serious?!” he blurted out when informed of the problem.
“They have to… God… what were… OK… umm.”
Kornacki then dropped his head into his hand.
And the wait kept going.
Later, Kornacki told viewers NBC was still waiting for Milwaukee election officials to “get their act together” as the network approached the end of its livestream without being able to declare a winner.
“I hate doin’ this to you, because I know you’re here for results,” Kornacki lamented.
Eventually, Milwaukee got the numbers in.
Crowley emerged on top by just over 3,200 votes out of more than 787,000 cast, with Hong conceding early Wednesday. The margin was roughly four-tenths of a percentage point.
And after surviving the marathon, Kornacki checked back in with the viewers who had endured it alongside him.
“Thank you so much to everyone who joined in for our livestream last night,” he wrote Wednesday on X.
“I couldn’t believe how many of you were right there with me as Milwaukee kept us waiting (and waiting) into the wee hours.”
“I hope you got at least a little sleep!”
