Democrat Angie Nixon: Giving Unborn Babies Human Rights Would be “Devastating”

Florida Democrat Senate candidate Angie Nixon doesn’t think unborn human beings should have human rights.

Nixon once warned that giving unborn babies basic human rights would be “devastating,” according to a newly surfaced video clip, and she worked to strip funding from a state pregnancy resource website because it encourages women not to have abortions.

In the clip, the Jacksonville Democrat and state representative expressed alarm that Republicans might pass a bill treating a unborn child as a person.

“There’s a potential for, for [Republicans] to put in a bill […] to make it so that a fetus and zygote is considered a person […] a fetus having basic rights […] that’s going to be devastating,” Nixon said.

Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Democratic nominee against pro-life Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, has a long record of opposing Florida’s protections for unborn children. She voted against the state’s six-week abortion limit and other measures aimed at defending life in the womb.

She also targeted Strong Florida Moms, a website created by the Florida Department of Health and the Department of Children and Families. The site describes itself as a place “where you can access information about what to expect during pregnancy, resources to obtain health care, and answers to many of the questions Florida moms and dads have about parenting.”

It offers practical help to mothers and families and does not steer women toward abortion.

Nixon said she tried to cut the site’s funding, making it clear she’s pro-abortion not pro-life.

“It sounds as though it is the site that we pushed back against in regards to them using more dollars […] I actually did an amendment to try to carve that out […] yeah, they basically want to encourage people to not go through with abortions,” she said.

When the measure came to a vote, Nixon opposed the website.

As Nixon campaigns statewide, the comments underscore her opposition both to recognizing the humanity of the unborn and to public resources that support motherhood rather than abortion.
