Virginia Pro-Lifers Fight Radical Abortion Amendment 1 Week Into Early Voting

Virginia pro-life leaders are pressing voters to reject Ballot Question 1 as early voting continues, warning the proposed constitutional amendment would strip the state of its ability to protect women and unborn children.

Olivia Gans Turner, executive director of the Virginia Society for Human Life, said ballots already being cast will shape whether Virginia can keep laws that protect innocent human life in the womb.

“The polls are open and the votes are being cast that will direct Virginia’s future ability to protect innocent human life in the womb,” Turner said. “Ballot question 1 is the most insidious threat to our right to pass the laws needed to protect women and their children. It is dressed up as a legitimate measure in innocuous language that hides the full effect of adding this amendment to our State Constitution.”

Early in-person voting for the Nov. 3 election began Sept. 18 and continues through Oct. 31.

Question 1 asks voters whether the Virginia Constitution should be amended to allow abortions up to birth – even though the wording of the amendment makes it appear it protects health care for women.

Turner said that ballot language conceals the amendment’s force.

“The drafters and supporters of this amendment know that if passed, any and all rational laws still on our books in Virginia will be superseded by an amendment that has the greater force of law,” she said. “This is not about protecting maternal health care or various types of pregnancy or sexual health care. It is about overriding Virginia’s laws and eliminating all ability of elected officials to provide much needed oversight and protective laws in the future.”

“This amendment only protects abortion promoters and businesses, not women or their babies,” Turner said. “Vote No Today!”

Turner is also urging doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to oppose the measure. She said Virginia Medical Professionals for the Safety of Women is asking them to sign a letter “that opposes the dangerous unlimited abortion amendment.”

“This group is a part of the Americans Association of Pro-life OB-GYNs and they are also a critical partner in the Virginia Coalition to Stop passage of Ballot Question 1,” Turner said.

She said a group of pro-abortion doctors has endorsed a “yes” vote.

“We know that there are more Virginia doctors, nurses and other medical professionals that recognize how risky this amendment is to the women and babies of Virginia,” Turner said. “We need you to step up now!”

She asked medical professionals to sign the letter and urged others to share it with doctors, family members and friends in medicine.

Question 1 needs only a simple majority to amend the state constitution with a right to kill babies.. Election Day is Nov. 3.
