A Nova Scotia mother of five is speaking out after the abortion pill nearly killed her.
The abortion pill triggered life-threatening bleeding, forcing emergency surgery to remove part of the baby that nearly cost her life — a harrowing ordeal pro-life advocates say underscores the hidden dangers of chemical abortions pushed as “safe.”
Cherise Basque, a woman from Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation, opted for the abortion drug about a month ago on advice from her family doctor, citing bleeding complications in prior pregnancies that had required interventions. She took five pills at home to care for her children during the process, but what followed was a cascade of agony that left her traumatized.
Basque arrived at the emergency room bleeding so profusely she soaked through her pants and onto the floor. When she told a nurse it stemmed from the abortion pill, the response was chilling.
“All she heard was ‘abortion pill,’ and after that, she rolled her eyes at me. And she started treating me differently,” Basque recounted. The nurse dismissed her concerns: “She was, like, ‘No, well, you know what? It’s just the pill doing its job.’”

Despite her history of heavy bleeding after births — which always demanded medical help — Basque felt judged and ignored in the crowded ER.
Sent home without adequate care, Basque soon fainted on her front steps. She called 911, and paramedics rushed her back to the hospital, where surgeons discovered a part of the baby’s body lodged in her womb and hemorrhaging that could have proven fatal. Doctors later told her that her 911 call saved her life.
Nova Scotia Health expressed regret, stating in an email: “very sorry to hear about this patient’s experience” and affirming that “patient care and safety are our top priorities regardless of a patient’s ethnicity, background or personal health history”
Pro-life groups point to Basque’s case as emblematic of broader risks from abortion pills like Mifegymiso — a two-drug regimen of mifepristone and misoprostol that starves the unborn child of progesterone before triggering contractions to expel the remains of the dead baby’s body. Health Canada notes average bleeding lasts 11.4 days, with severe hemorrhage common in up to 10% of cases, often requiring surgical intervention.
A major study highlighted an “alarming rate of harm for women,” including infections from bacteria invading the opened cervix.

Just weeks ago, on September 19, reports emerged of another Canadian tragedy: 19-year-old Rheanna Laderoute of Ontario died from sepsis after taking the same pill at a Brampton clinic. She endured two weeks of excruciating pain — rating it “10 out of 10” — and visited the ER three times before peritonitis, a sepsis complication, overwhelmed her body.
Bacteria likely entered her uterus during expulsion of the baby’s body, turning a “routine” abortion procedure deadly.
