Appeals Court Rules Planned Parenthood Defunding Will Continue

The Trump administration can continue to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business. That’s the new ruling from a federal appeals court.

The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit lifts a preliminary injunction issued in State of California et al. v. Department of Health and Human Services that sought to block a provision of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” which defunds major abortion companies like Planned Parenthood.

The decision involves one of many lawsuits against the One Big Beautiful Bill and its defunding provision. The lawsuits include two filed in Massachusetts by 21 states and the District of Columbia, one from the Planned Parenthood abortion business itself and a third from the state of Maine.

In each of the cases appeals courts have been ruling in favor of Congress, President Trump and their ability to defund the nation’s biggest abortion business.

After the ruling related to the first lawsuit this week, California promised to continue fighting to force Americans to fund the abortion company.

“Although we are disappointed in the court’s decision, we remain committed to holding the federal administration accountable and ensuring vulnerable Californians can access the health care they need,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office said in a statement.

In the Maine case, the local abortion company ultimately dismissed the lawsuit.

Meanwhile, National Right to Life welcomed the decision.

“This ruling is an important reminder that the federal government has both the authority and the responsibility to ensure taxpayer dollars are not used to subsidize elective abortion,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “The First Circuit correctly recognized that HHS is likely to prevail on the merits. Americans overwhelmingly oppose being forced to fund abortion, and this decision helps restore accountability and respect for long-standing federal law.”

The One Big Beautiful Bill, signed into law on July 4th by President Donald J. Trump, includes critical provisions that halt the use of taxpayer dollars to subsidize the abortion industry. It passed narrowly in Congress after a strong show of resolve from pro-life lawmakers.
