As Abortions Skyrocket, Birth Rate of Black Americans Absolutely Plummets

The number of births to Black women in the United States fell more sharply than for any other major racial or ethnic group in 2024, according to final data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a result of skyrocketing abortions in recent years due to the expansion of the abortion pill, the black birth rate is reaching levels described as among the lowest on record.

The CDC report, “Births: Final Data for 2024,” recorded 473,377 births to non-Hispanic Black women, a 4 percent decline from 491,494 in 2023. The general fertility rate for Black women dropped 5 percent to 50.9 births per 1,000 females ages 15–44, while the total fertility rate fell 5 percent to 1,501.0.

By comparison, births declined 2 percent among American Indian and Alaska Native women and less than 1 percent among non-Hispanic White women. Births rose 4 percent among Hispanic women and 5 percent among Asian women.

The overall U.S. total fertility rate hit a record low of 1,599.5 births per 1,000 women, well below the replacement level of roughly 2,100.

The birth rate among Black teens ages 15–19 fell 8 percent in that period, and the average age at first birth for Black women has risen to about 25.9.

Pro-life leaders view the sustained drop as the tragic continuation of a demographic crisis long warned about in the Black community.

In a July 27 analysis, Walter Hoye of the Issues4Life Foundation connected the trend to Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger’s “Negro Project,” which she introduced on June 25, 1939.

Hoye quoted Sanger’s December 18, 1939, letter: “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”

Hoye argued that Sanger’s goal of limiting Black population growth is being realized through today’s low fertility. He noted that a statistically reconstructed estimate of the total fertility rate for Black women in the 1850s was 7.9 births per woman, and that rates far below the 2.11 replacement level threaten irreversible decline.

“Abortion in the Black American community needs to end now,” he wrote.

The CDC figures confirm a multi-year downward path for Black fertility, with births and rates falling steadily in recent years while remaining below replacement.

High abortion rates in the Black community, combined with broader cultural shifts toward delayed or forgone childbearing, are accelerating the very outcome Sanger once sought to achieve.
