“Behold the Lamb of God” –the cry of John the Baptist on seeing Jesus at the River Jordan—is the most significant battle cry of the ancient world. The struggle in human affairs has always been between power and compassion; between control and love. Human history has been dominated by the pursuit of power and the use of force. Nation invades nation; tribe decimates tribe; kings and generals lead their people against one another in the quest for territory, control, resources, blood, dominance, victory. When Jesus approached St John the Baptist at the River Jordan, and John called out in recognition, “Behold the Lamb of God,” a totally new religious and philosophical event was born onto the world stage.
