After nearly five years of dead ends, delays, and mounting public frustration, Attorney General Pam Bondi stepped to the podium Thursday and delivered the news Washington had all but given up on: a suspect has finally been arrested in the Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation.
Bondi identified the man as Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old from Woodbridge, Virginia — the first person ever charged in connection with the explosives planted outside both the DNC and RNC headquarters on the eve of the Capitol riot.
Cole faces charges for use of an explosive device, with Bondi making clear that more charges are coming as the investigation accelerates.
Prince William County Schools confirmed that Cole graduated high school in 2013, but federal agents were still tearing through evidence Thursday afternoon as search warrants continued across his neighborhood.
Cole was arrested early in the morning, and Bondi stressed that investigators didn’t get some magical new lead — they got results by re-examining evidence the FBI already had.
Something the Biden Administration failed to do.
“Today’s arrest happened because the Trump administration has made this case a priority,” Bondi said “The total lack of movement on this case in our nation’s capital undermined the public trust of our enforcement agencies.”
Standing beside her, FBI Director Kash Patel hammered home that a fresh review by elite specialists cracked open the case at last.
“When you develop evidence, you get a search warrant. When you get a search warrant, you get an address. And when you get an address, you hit the house — and that’s what we did,” Patel said.
