Canadian Planned Parenthood Center Temporarily Shuts Down

A Canadian office of the Planned Parenthood abortion business is temporarily shutting down amid financial problems.

Planned Parenthood Ottawa, based in the Canadian capital city, has temporarily halted all front-line activities amid a severe financial crisis. While the center does not directly kill babies in abortions, it arranges abortions that take the lives of children before birth.

The nonprofit organization announced the pause on Friday, citing unrenewed government and community grants and a budget overrun of nearly $100,000 in the last fiscal year.

Executive Director Lyra Evans described the decision as a necessary reset to ensure long-term viability.

“The board has looked at our financial situation, looked at our labor situation, and said, ‘We need some time to sit down and pause what’s going on,’” Evans said in an interview with CBC News.

The agency, which relies heavily on public funding, faced a cash crunch after Ottawa Public Health — itself grappling with a deficit — could not provide expected support. All six unionized front-line staff were laid off earlier this year, forcing Evans to temporarily shoulder their duties. That overload, Evans acknowledged, played a role in the broader operational breakdown.

“If all of my time was being spent trying to keep the boat afloat, none of it was being spent fixing the boat,” Evans said. “With this brief pause, we now have the time to sit down and figure [out], what should we be offering? How can we best serve the community?”

The pause extends through December 2025, with the center closed. The organization aims to resume limited operations in 2026, potentially rehiring a few staff.

The closure comes at a time when 45 Planned Parenthood abortion centers in the United States have closed after federal defunding.
