“We made a promise to the kids: We’ll be your last foster family until you find a forever home. We just didn’t, quite frankly, think it would be us,” Michael Hendon told KENS5 news.
Michael and Connie Hendon, a married couple in their 60s, found themselves in a very familiar journey in early November. After adopting four children in four separate adoptions about 30 years ago, they just added two more children to their family.
“We never thought we would get two elementary-aged kids and that they would end up in our home forever,” Michael said.
But after fostering Arianna and Amberly, they couldn’t part with them.

“We have kids that could be these children’s mom and dad, and we go, ‘How do we do this?’ And we realised we’re just the best fit, and we take that as a holy obligation,” Michael highlighted.
“It was a grateful feeling that we were able to keep our promise to them,” Connie added. “They were ready for a family, and we were ready for them.”
4,145 Texas children are waiting to be adopted, as of August 31. As Christians, it is our duty to protect and provide for the orphan.
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27
Many people assume adoption is only for those in their 20s or 30s. But Scripture never puts an age limit on caring for children in need; it’s a calling that lasts a lifetime. Michael and Connie Hendon are a powerful reminder that this gift can be embraced at any age. And their daughters are living testimony to the joy and gratitude that follow when someone says “yes.”
The girls, Arianna and Amberly, shared their perspective with KENS5.
“I’m happy that we have a family that loves us and takes care of us,” said Amberly. “It is the best feeling ever. It was exciting to get things over with (her adoption day) and have someone I could call family.”
“You take what other people can’t quite manage and you make it into a family,” Michael said. “The world didn’t really value very much what we have made precious. It is your responsibility to give back what your parents gave to you. Be a parent to a child that has none.”
Praise God for the Hendons and their testimony that will encourage countless families. Their faith-filled “yes” shows what God can do when everyday people open their homes and trust Him with the rest. And with more than four thousand Texas children still waiting for families, the Hendons’ example invites all of us to pray, support, and be ready for the moment when God might open a door for us to change a child’s life.
