Don Says He’s Having ‘Personal Talks With Democrats’ About Fixing Healthcare [WATCH]

Might an Obamacare fix be on the way?

President Trump lit a political fuse Sunday, revealing he’s been in quiet talks with Democrats about a new direct healthcare payment plan.

“I’ve had personal talks with some Democrats,” Trump told reporters in West Palm Beach before flying back to Washington.

He didn’t name names — but he hinted at big dollars on the table.

The conversations, he said, have been “about paying large amounts of dollars back to the people.”

Trump has been pitching a plan to send money directly from insurance companies back to Americans, letting them buy their own coverage — and he claims Democrats are now warming to the idea.

“People love it,” he said.

“The insurance companies are making a fortune. Their stock is up over a thousand percent over a short period of time. They are taking in hundreds of billions of dollars, and they’re not really putting it back, certainly like they should,” he added.

The president’s comments dropped just as the Senate scrambles to address rising premiums in the wake of the shutdown.

Democrats kept the government closed for weeks, insisting the Trump administration and GOP extend Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire at year’s end, warning premiums would spike without them.

But in the end, eight Democrats broke ranks, cutting a deal with Republicans to reopen the government without forcing an extension of the subsidies.

Retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) — one of the eight — has been steering talks between a cluster of Republicans and Democrats, though many GOP senators say they oppose renewing the ACA subsidies.

Still, momentum is building inside the Democratic caucus.

A Senate aide told The Hill that about 20 Democratic offices have already floated interest in a deal to extend them.

Now Trump says Democrats are talking to him too — privately — as both sides hunt for a way to tackle premiums before the clock runs out.
