A “gender affirming” hospital in Boston stopped performing transgender hormone interventions on minors last week, citing federal policy defunding “harmful chemical and surgical interventions.”
Fenway Health, previously described as “one of the major providers of gender-affirming care in Boston” by the Boston Globe, announced last Monday it would no longer offer opposite-sex hormones or puberty blocking drugs to patients under 19 years old.
The hospital attributed its decision to federal Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) policies that went into effect on October 1. Failure to comply with HRSA regulations would jeopardize Fenway Health’s status as a federally qualified health center .
Federally qualified health centers serve low-income populations. The federal government reimburses these facilities for treating patients who can’t pay for their care. To maintain their status, they must comply with HRSA and other federal regulations.
“Being an FQHC allows us to continue delivering high-quality comprehensive care for more than 30,000 residents of New England and beyond,” Fenway Health wrote in its announcement. “Losing this status would challenge our ability to meet the needs of all who rely on us.”
Though it’s unclear what specific regulation instigated Fenway Health’s about-face, HRSA announced it would begin updating its policies to “protect children from chemical and surgical mutilation” in March.
In September, the administration clarified it would discourage performing transgender surgical and hormone interventions on minors by defunding or deprioritizing funding for projects incorporating “gender affirming” care.
Fenway Health’s decision to stop injecting gender-confused kids with opposite-sex hormones and puberty blockers — drugs used off-label to delay or stunt the onset of adult development — ostensibly conflicts with a city council resolution declaring Boston a “sanctuary city for transgender individuals and all members of the LGBTQIA2s+ community.”
The resolution (illegally) orders taxpayer-funded organizations to defy federal regulations prohibiting the chemical and surgical mutilation of children.
That’s what so-called gender affirming care is — mutilation. The Department of Health and Human Services’ comprehensive review of transgender surgery, opposite-sex hormones and puberty blockers leaves no doubt:
The “gender-affirming” model of care includes irreversible endocrine and surgical interventions on minors with no physical pathology.
These interventions carry risk of significant harms including infertility/sterility, sexual dysfunction, impaired bone density accrual, adverse cognitive impacts, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders, psychiatric disorders, surgical complications and regret.
Case-in-point: a recent review of the effects of estrogen on men found men taking estrogen experienced higher risk of:
- Premature death
- Developing or worsening autoimmune diseases
- Developing diabetes
- Developing pancreatitis
- Developing thyroid and breast cancer
- Drug interactions causing cancerous neoplasms and cardiovascular anomalies
Estrogen and medications that “block” testosterone were further associated with decreased brain volume, problems with mood and memory and the development of major depressive disorder in men.
Federal pressure to end these barbaric procedures has forced more than a dozen transgender clinics like Fenway Health to close, including the University of Michigan’s medical clinic and the “Center for Transyouth” at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
The FBI is investigating Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Boston Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado for mutilating children under the guise of “gender-affirming” care. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating doctors for using fraudulent and deceptive business practices to advertise and administer transgender medical interventions.
Healthcare organizations are charged with healing the sick — not turning them into life-long medical patients. The Daily Citizen applauds the federal government for protecting vulnerable patients when hospitals like Fenway Health and cities like Boston refuse to.
