Schumer’s days on the Hill are numbered.
The Senate may have ended the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, but will the Democratic Party survive the solve?
Democrat lawmakers and progressives erupted in fury Sunday night after Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) failed to stop a bipartisan deal to reopen the government — a move that had liberals calling for his head.
Schumer, who voted against the bill, was blasted for losing control of his caucus after five Democrats defected, giving Republicans the votes they needed to advance the measure without a single concession on expiring Obamacare subsidies.
“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,” fumed Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) on X. “If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), already gunning for a Senate seat, piled on: “Tonight is another example of why we need new leadership. If @ChuckSchumer were an effective leader, he would have united his caucus to vote ‘No’ tonight and hold the line on healthcare.” He even taunted Sen. Ed Markey, asking if he’d finally pledge not to back Schumer after 2026.
The anger wasn’t just coming from Capitol Hill.
Democratic challengers across the country joined the pile-on. “Chuck Schumer is not built for this moment,” wrote Maine Senate hopeful Graham Platner.
“Chuck Schumer has failed us,” echoed Iowa state Sen. Zach Wahls, who’s running to replace GOP Sen. Joni Ernst.
The five defectors — Dick Durbin, Tim Kaine, Maggie Hassan, Jeanne Shaheen, and Jacky Rosen — crossed the aisle to help end debate on the GOP-drafted plan.
But even Shaheen’s daughter turned on her.
Stefany Shaheen, running for Congress in New Hampshire, blasted the deal her mother helped cut. “I cannot support this deal when Speaker Johnson refuses to even allow a vote to extend health care tax credits,” she declared. “We need to both end this shutdown and extend the ACA tax credits. Otherwise, no deal.”
