Federal immigration agents arrested more than 100 illegal alien truck drivers on California highways during a sweeping enforcement effort dubbed Operation Highway Sentinel, ICE announced.
The crackdown was sparked by a string of deadly crashes tied to commercial driver’s licenses issued under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s policies.
Authorities said the operation was launched after multiple fatal crashes across several states involving illegal alien truck drivers who were licensed in California, fueling concerns that the state’s commercial licensing practices are endangering motorists nationwide.
Those arrested included illegal aliens from India, Mexico, Colombia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Nicaragua, Russia, Georgia, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Honduras, according to federal officials.
“Gavin Newsom’s sanctuary state policies are costing American lives,” said Madison Sheahan, deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“His government knowingly issued thousands of CDLs to illegal aliens who had no business driving at all, let alone behind the wheel of a massive semi-truck,” Sheahan continued. “These drivers get their licenses, leave California, then terrorize roads all over the country.”
“ICE is stepping in where his state failed,” she added. “Just like our operations in Oklahoma and Indiana, we are taking these dangerous illegal alien truckers off the roads and making California streets safe again.”
ICE said Operation Highway Sentinel was launched in direct response to mounting evidence that criminal illegal aliens operating commercial vehicles have been involved in multiple fatal accidents in states including California, Florida, and Oregon — incidents the agency says have claimed eight innocent lives.
Federal officials also accused California of issuing thousands of CDLs to illegal aliens, including individuals who could not read English or understand road signs.
Similar enforcement operations have already been carried out in Indiana, New York, and Oklahoma, resulting in the arrest of more than 200 illegal immigrant truck drivers nationwide who were issued commercial licenses.
“This week HSI, along with our partners, conducted enforcement operations targeting illegal alien commercial truck drivers across California’s Central Valley in the interest of public safety,” said Homeland Security Investigations San Francisco special agent in charge Tatum King.
“In the wake of multiple deadly motor vehicle accidents involving illegal aliens operating as commercial truck drivers, federal law enforcement is taking action to prevent further tragedy.”
