Indiana Abortions Drop 98% as Abortion Ban Saves Babies

Indiana’s abortion ban has dramatically reduced the number of abortions in the state, saving countless unborn babies, according to the latest data from the Indiana Department of Health.

Abortions plummeted from an average of 989 per month before the ban’s full implementation to just 14 per month in the third quarter of 2025, marking a profound victory for pro-life advocates who credit the law with protecting vulnerable babies.

The quarterly report, released this month, shows only 42 abortions performed in Indiana from July through September 2025 — a stark contrast to the 2,967 abortions reported in the same period of 2022, before the ban took effect.

That 2022 figure equates to about 989 abortions per month over the three-month span. By comparison, the 42 abortions in 2025’s third quarter average out to roughly 14 per month, highlighting the ban’s effectiveness in protecting unborn children.

Pro-life groups like Indiana Right to Life hailed the numbers as evidence that the state’s restrictions, enacted after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, are working to safeguard the unborn.

The law limits abortions to very rare cases involving lethal fetal anomalies, serious risks to the mother’s health or life, or instances of rape or incest — limited exceptions that accounted for all 42 abortions in the recent quarter.

Of course many women may have purchased abortion pills or gone out of state for abortions but undoubtedly many babies are alive today that could have been aborted thanks to the abortion ban.

The rate of abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age (15-44) has fallen from 1.49 in 2021 to a mere 0.03 in 2025, underscoring a near-elimination of abortion outside narrow exceptions.

Further good news for life advocates includes the complete absence of abortions after 20 weeks of post-fertilization age, ensuring no late-term abortions that pro-life supporters often decry as particularly inhumane.

All reported abortions were performed on Indiana resident and their babies, with no out-of-state abortion customers, signaling the ban’s role in deterring abortion tourism and focusing protections within the state. Breaking down the 42 abortions, the majority — 23, or 54% — occurred between 14 and 20 weeks gestation, while 27, or 64%, were attributed to lethal fetal anomalies.

Twelve were due to serious health risks to the mother, and the remaining few involved rape, incest or combined factors.

One baby was reported born alive during an abortion, a detail that pro-life groups say underscores the humanity of the unborn even in exceptional cases. The abortions were concentrated at a handful of facilities, with Riley Health Maternity Tower in Marion County doing 19 (45%) and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, also in Marion County, doing 17 (40%).  Smaller numbers occurred at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Allen County (3), Indiana University Health University Hospital in Marion County (2), and Good Samaritan Hospital in Knox County (1).
