Israeli forces struck a gathering of Iran’s Supreme Council on Tuesday as members were meeting to choose a successor to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to a senior Israeli official who spoke to Fox News.
Fox News foreign correspondent Trey Yingst reported the development live Tuesday morning, saying the strike underscored the depth of Israeli intelligence penetration inside Iran.
“They just targeted the meeting in Tehran where what’s left of the leadership was gathering to choose a new Supreme Leader,” Yingst said on air.
The reported strike comes days after the opening salvo of what the Pentagon has dubbed Operation Epic Fury — a coordinated U.S.-Israeli campaign targeting senior regime figures and military infrastructure.
According to Fox News reporting, the United States and Israel killed 49 of Iran’s most senior leaders in the initial wave of strikes Saturday morning, a blow that left Iran’s military command structure fractured and scrambling.
Israeli officials have argued that sustained pressure is necessary to dismantle Iran’s command-and-control capabilities and prevent further retaliation.
