John Thune Vows To Bring SAVE Act Up For Vote As Soon As He’s Sure It Won’t Pass

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With Americans pressing their senators and representatives to take action to secure elections, Senate Majority Leader John Thune vowed to bring the SAVE Act up for a vote as soon as he was sure it wouldn’t pass.

Thune has come under fire in recent weeks for seemingly trying to obstruct the overwhelmingly popular legislation from making it through the Senate, but assured the American people that he would absolutely get the bill to the floor for a vote once he was entirely confident that it would fail.

“As soon as I know it doesn’t have the votes, we’ll bring it to the floor,” Thune told reporters at a Capitol Hill briefing as debate on the SAVE Act continued. “Our esteemed colleagues in the House of Representatives worked very hard to get this legislation through their chamber, so I owe it to them to do my best to pretend to be in favor of it. Once I get assurances from my fellow senators that the bill will fall short of the number of votes needed to pass, I’ll definitely bring it up for a vote. You have my word. Whatever that’s worth.”

The South Dakota senator stressed that bringing the bill to the floor only when it was guaranteed to be voted down was a key part of the Senate GOP’s agenda for 2026. “It all hinges on this,” he said. “If this doesn’t go the right way, we could be looking at a real danger of retaining control of Congress. We can’t let that happen. That’s why I’m committed to bringing this bill for a vote as soon as I know it won’t pass.”

At publishing time, Thune had pushed back a vote on the SAVE Act in favor of scheduling another Senate Dog Parade.
