Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, will cease all operations in Louisiana effective Sept. 30 by closing its two remaining facilities in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The closures follow restrictions in Medicaid funding for abortion facilities in the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed by Congress last July, which has prompted Planned Parenthood to shutter dozens of other facilities nationwide.
The closures also follow sustained legal and financial pressures from the largely pro-life Louisiana executive and legislative branches. In more than 40 years of operation in the state, Planned Parenthood had never been licensed to perform abortions there. Even though Louisiana legislators banned abortion in nearly all cases with a trigger law that took effect when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Planned Parenthood still helped provide referrals and travel funding for women to obtain abortions across state lines.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry hailed the closures as a major pro-life victory stating that abortion “should never be considered health care.” The state’s attorney general, Liz Murrill, also welcomed the news indicating that the abortion giant did not prioritize health care or protecting life.

“Planned Parenthood built its business around promoting death. Louisiana chooses life. We will always protect women and babies,” stated AG Murrill.
Planned Parenthood had announced in May that 200 out of its 600 facilities nationwide could close due to the Medicaid defunding provisions in the bill.
Recently, Louisiana took two more steps to protect pregnant women. After House Bill 575, known as “Justice for Victims of Abortion Drug Dealers Act,” took effect, residents can now sue out-of-state health care professionals who mail abortion-inducing drugs into the state. This can occur even if abortion is legal in the state from where the drugs were mailed.
Also recently taking effect is House Bill 425, which expands the definition of coerced abortion to include the “use or threatened use of force, control, or intimidation.” It is now illegal in Louisiana to compel a pregnant woman to undergo an abortion against her will, regardless of whether the procedure has been attempted or completed.
Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, “Any organization like Planned Parenthood that kills babies and harms women should not have a place in any state. State officials and legislators should keep up the pressure to defund abortion providers and protect women and children.”
